Brixham Heritage Trail Guide is Launched
The Brixham Heritage Trail Guide has officially launched! A glossy 28 page A5 brochure has been produced and sent to print, due to arrive and be distributed amongst the townspeople of Brixham just in time for BrixFest 2017 (Saturday 27th - Wednesday 31st May).
A labour of love, the Heritage Trail has combined memories and stories from local people alongside historical Brixham landmarks to create a unique, winding path through the town's history. Those wanting to find out more about Brixham in war-time may well find themselves learning about the town's old pottery industry along the way. Want to find out where 'Abide with Me' was written all those years ago? Chances are you'll also learn about The Great Gale of Brixham.
(Above left) The first two pages of the guide. (Above Right) The first steps of the Trail.
Thanks to the fantastic Heritage Lottery Funding Grant, the official Heritage Trail Guide is now live. 10,000 copies are being printed as-we-type and we can't wait to share them with everyone, locals and visitors alike. As we take delivery of them, they'll be distributed to local shops, cafes, restaurants and Tourist Information Centres so that anyone visiting Brixham has the opportunity to explore her history deeper than ever before.
On top of this, the Live Action Day at BrixFest 2017 takes place on Tuesday 30th May. The brochures will form an integral part of this day and visitors to the festival will be encouraged to explore the rest of the trail at their leisure following the event. We can't wait!
Our Mobile Application is unfortunately not quite ready yet, but rest assured it'll be with us all very soon. And it looks beautiful. More on that as soon as we have it.
In the meantime, get exploring!
Brixham is a town full of fish and chips, glorious beaches, fabulous community events and absolutely phenomenal coastline: but what it's most rich in, is history!
Whether we talk about famous hymns written while watching the sunrise, or the culture surrounding Britain's most profitable fishing port: the red sails in the sunset, or caverns hiding thousands of years of secrets, every corner of our wonderful town is packed full of fascinating heritage.
This heritage is something we're particularly good at celebrating - but what we're not so great at (as a community), is capturing memories and saving them for future generations to enjoy and to marvel at.
Fortunately, the folks at The Heritage Lottery Fund also reckon Brixham and her citizens have memories worth keeping! A grant has been approved and the work begins! The BrixFest committee members alongside representatives from South Devon College, Brixham Chamber of Commerce and individuals in the wider Torbay Community are gathering together to organise Brixham Heritage Trail. The trail will guide visitors around the town from point of interest, to point of interest.
The Trail gets the go ahead!
An free interactive mobile app, produced by media students at South Devon College, will accompany the trail leaflet (also free!).
The Brixham Heritage Trail will call upon recorded memories and stories contributed by local members of the communities. If you have some memories, pictures, recordings or stories to share: please let us know!
